suction records is proud to present ii - a new, archival ep release by italian duo d’arcangelo. we like to think of ii as an imaginary sequel to the duos classic 1996 debut ep on aphex twins legendary, now-defunct rephlex records (also reissued on suction last year). just like their debut ep, the material on ii was recorded in the ‘90s using hardware synths, samplers, and fx. also like their debut, ii similarly features fierce, crunchy industrialized electronix on side a, backed with melodic, robotic electro (the darcangelo brothers call these tracks their diagrams) on side b. four of the six tracks are previously unreleased, while aom2 (an absolute monster rephlex-style distorted beat track) and diagram ix (a timeless slice of early-human league-style synth pop) come from long-out-of-print 90s vinyl comps on eclectic records and suction records, respectively.

losouls another picture label follows on from eps in 2017 by honesty and the label boss himself with a new two tracker by japanese artist sasaki hiroaki. the yotsume label owner is based in tokyo and his sleek sounds take cues from 80s new wave and look for a soulful vibe in electronic music. 2018 has already seen him release on open recordings and now he offers up some warm house rollers for another picture. ‘eo1 is eight minutes of rubbery drums and loose, scattered percussion, tumbling toms and clicks. dreamy chords light up the background and the whole thing drives ever deeper into the night, always evolving as it goes. on the flip, ‘plain song is just as heartfelt, but icy hi hats and metal stabs are more upright, getting you on your toes and keeping you there for another eight minutes of organic, authentic deep house bliss.

eshu, the production collective and record label from nijmegen are back with their next offering. their 12th release is a various artists release that features blm, joburg and steven siwalette alongside label members ivano tetelepta and jocelyn abell. it comes on the heels of teteleptas absorbing dub techno album, senang, and is another high class offering. nijmegen based siwalette is first, previously contributed to the label as part of sys. his stragglers is a sparse but atmospheric track with industrial drones and slowly turning drums taking you through a desolate factory late at night. his second offering is alien encounter which is just as it sounds - a spooky, unsettling bit of cinematic sound design with menacing bass and icy pads all growing in loudness until they eventually consume your mind. lastly on the a-side, uk producer and fear of flying label boss blm lays down a skeletal groove thats embellished with beautiful, yawning synths. scattered little details and fx making this a cavernous piece that encourages your mind to wander and get lost. on the flip, jocelyn abell and ivano tetelepta cook up a heavyweight, mid tempo bit of dub techno with sharp hits and rolling kicks lulling you into a trance. last of all, the emerging j?burg picks up the pace with a perfectly chiselled bit of rock solid dub with looping drums and icy hi hats sinking you deep into its midst. this is an excellent ep that packs in a range of fascinating sounds for both the home and the club.

coletivo vandalismo kick-start a new 12inch series for the contort yourself label. hailing from the city of porto the duo also dj under the name gam and released their debut lp on lake haze s eye for an eye label. their music has an immediacy that seems to stem from a background in live performance as opposed to polished studio sessions - an improvisational punk aesthetic that manages to carry this ep so strongly. wild, crashing fx and unrecognisable vocal distortions layer atop wonky 90bpm drum machine grooves and the pair even show off what may be their turntablism skills on zombie zombie. theres a nod to early concrete on the closing track black suns demise with whirring, mechanical noise motifs suddenly jolting us into punishing gabber-at-33-minus-8 territory. the diy spirit is alive and well here and the feeling that things could fall apart at any minute just adds to the tension.

assertiveness can be virtue. hence, boss moves - luca lozanos debut for running back - is aptly titled. generously spread over two vinyl plates, lozano investigates the hybrid sound that once was embodied by groups like future sound of london, labels like guerilla and djs such as sasha or dave angel. blessed with the production of skills of today, the eyes of a tailor and the chemoreceptors of a perfumer, the klasse wrecks and grafiti tapes man delivers nine tracks that do it all: tribal, trance, breakbeats, house, 303s, bleeps, rave, dubby deepness and pianos. like a trip down the 3d-visual-kaleidoscopic-artwork* hole or a snake charmer without a flute. intake as a whole, record it to your tape desk and feel like tuning into on a pirate station in ‘95. happiness is just around the bend. *none of that can be found here. see explosive black-and-white sleeve for further reference.

listening back to roman poncets first releases on figure just a couple years ago, they already hinted at the producers keen technical abilities and a knack for rich texturing, resulting in tracks that were both carried by force and form. what he delivers now is an impressively mature debut album, ripe with personal creative realization. on gypsophila the french producer uses the extended format to slowly shape up a scenery of epic proportions where surprise and constant change lurk around every corner.

farron gets back on shaw cuts with his fourth record, invincible shaolin a tale of double-dealing, rivalry, royalty and bad blood. manchu general pus evil quest to eradicate the shaolin tradition unfolds, cunningly pitting north and south shaolins against each other. spring break ya neck opens the clash with its rhythmic shifts and whirling synth pads. the northern masters prevail. after pus henchmen secretly kill the southern shaolin, the general blames the masters from the north, unleashing chaos. cosmicaph restores order, its pounding drums and floating melodies giving new strength to the southern shaolin. revenge must be taken. to prepare for conquer, the southern master sends three of his disciples to three masters to learn their secret weapons. sir hatch sets the pace with rolling punches, dirty synths and sharp percussion as the three disciples transform into lethal fighting machines. just before the final encounter between the shaolin, leibniz lands on the scene with his fresh interpretation of spring break ya neck, revealing to both schools that they have been deceived. joining forces, north and south battle the general and his men, led by leibnizs funky drum patterns and turbulent synth action. and the shaolin spirit lives on

born in rio in 1940, helio won a guitar from his father at age 12.after working in sugar mills or as a sales clerk in record stores, he started performing at rio nightclubs (like plaza) and são paulo. in 1975 he signed to rca victor on which he released his first lp, -matheus segundo matheus- with arrangements by oberdan -black river- magalhães, zé rodrix and chiquinho de moraes with participation of azymuth as a support band withg a total of 128 musicians involved int he recording. unfortuanly this much deserved reissue didn t make it to press before helio passed last year, but we are most humble and proud to do it justice. one of my favourite brazilian lp s just to listen to.

vienna-based producer sam irl popped up on our radar a couple of years ago following stellar releases on jazz & milk, but honestly we should have been paying far closer attention as this guy has been making the best crunchy, mpc-driven jazz-infused house music dating right back to 2006. ep’s for s3a’s sampling as an art and collaborative projects with patrick pulsinger and dusty have won him fans including gilles peterson (leading to a release on brownswood), mr scruff and session victim amongst many others. his live sets have also seen him perform at the hallowed grounds of panorama bar and sonar festival. for his debut ep here on freerange sam has delivered four tracks which perfectly showcase his production skills and knowledge of what makes a dance floor tick, kicking off with title track rain technique. quirky keys and a playful groove help build a warm and charming vibe, light and bouncy yet deep and driving enough to get your dance on to. trust follows with loping, lopsided percussion forming the basis of the groove, sparse rhodes pads punctuating the beat and adding just the right musical element to the mix without cluttering the beats or compromising the sense of space. flipping over we have all thats left which sees sam utilising his trusted tr606 for some lovely snappy snares and sizzling hihats. chiming arpeggios join the repeating chord riff creating another simple yet uplifting and playful mood which cant fail to get under your skin. closing the ep we have a wonky, shuffling house track which once again shows sam proving less is more, sampling his key elements into the mpc and jamming out the arrangement in a live and improvised way which brings a fresh, somewhat naive appeal to the production.
